Game Overview

Memory Gliders (MG) is a serious game developed in collaboration with the European Union and Flybridge Studios. The game tells a poignant story of transgenerational trauma through the metaphorical journey of a bird whose ancestors were exiled from their home planet. The game uses narrative and simple mini-games to convey the weight of collective trauma, providing players with an emotional and immersive experience.

Memory Gliders serves a dual purpose as both a game and an educational tool, often used in classrooms to teach challenging topics in an accessible way. Through dialogues and symbolic gameplay, players engage with complex emotional themes, making difficult subjects easier to approach and understand.

My Role

For Memory Gliders, I was responsible for creating the game concept. Drawing on selected educational materials and academic literature on trauma, I developed the game’s outline, narrative framework, and world design. This included crafting sample dialogues and backstories for the characters, ensuring the game communicated the emotional depth of transgenerational trauma while remaining engaging for players.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizing the game’s world and narrative based on educational materials and literature on trauma
  • Designing character backstories and dialogue to reflect the themes of collective trauma and healing
  • Ensuring that the game remained approachable for both general players and educational settings

Key Insights

Memory Gliders holds a special place in my heart, as the research and development process gave me a deeper understanding of transgenerational trauma, both on a personal and intellectual level. Working on such a complex and emotionally charged topic was a significant challenge, but the game stands as a testament to how games can provide unique tools for exploring and explaining difficult, often ineffable, subjects. This project reinforced my belief in the power of games as a medium for learning and emotional discovery.
